Ease-in to Motherhood – July 2017

Hello my friends,

These last couple of year have brought a lot of changes to my life. Although all these changes have brought fears and insecurities, they’ve also brought great love and happiness to my life. I have been looking to open the conversation about motherhood and the changes that come with becoming a mother. This is how Erin from Seamstress Erin, Jodi from SewFearless and I have gathered forces and are getting ready to launch a motherhood sewing blog event, which will be happening during the month of July 2017!

We introduce you to:

“Ease-in to motherhood”

Ease-in to motherhood is a sewists’ celebration of motherhood and the changes it brings to our lives. During the month of July we invite you to share your experiences of the physical and mental changes of pregnancy, childbirth and/or any other way a child comes to your life. We invite you to share how you embrace yourself throughout motherhood, to appreciate all the physical and mental energy it takes, to accept and love the changes in your body, your mind and your life. We invite you to share how you still dedicate time to care for yourself. We invite you to share how sewing is a part of your life through the journey.

Why are we doing this?

As both new and experienced mothers, we (Monserratt, Jodi, and Erin) have found that it can be hard to make time to sew. It can be hard to make time for ourselves. It can be hard to love ourselves. It can be hard to love all the changes that being a mother brings. We know that one way to find support is in community and we are a part of an amazing community of sewists. Let’s talk about sewing as a way of loving, finding and embracing our new self as we let go the self we used to be before our last child. We want to hear stories, struggles, and successes of other mothers who sew so we can derive strength from them. We want to get our community talking so we can support each other. All mothers who sew are welcome to participate. It doesn’t matter how or when you became a mother, what you sew or how long you’ve been sewing.

How can you participate?

If you have a blog, write a blog post and talk about your experience as a mother and sewist or Post your story on Instagram, share a moment that makes you feel like you embrace yourself in this journey This event is taking place during the month of July. We’ll put together weekly roundup posts on our blogs so it’s easy for us all to find each other’s stories.

How to let us know?

If you write a blog post let us know in a comment on this post or email us at easeinmotherhood@gmail.com.

If you post on Instagram use the hashtag #easeintomotherhood

What should you write about?

Anything that has to do with motherhood and sewing.

Some suggested prompts: – Describe what role sewing played in your life before you became a mom. – How did life change when baby #1 arrived? How did life change after the first few months? (Feel free to share the good, the bad and the ugly. You might want to discuss: Your relationship with your emotional self, your physical self, your partner, and/or your friends. Work. Your feelings.) – If you have more than one baby, how did life change when further babies came into your life? – Did the role of sewing in your life change? How? (You might want to discuss: Did you sew for yourself? Your kids? Did the things you want to sew change? We welcome contributions long and short.

Write a novel. Snap a single photo. However you want to share is an important contribution.

    1. Hi Anna, I prepared so much for the actual birth of the baby and very little for what comes after. I had no idea about how cathartic it would be. Becoming a mother has been the hardest best experience of my life. I’m very much looking forward to reading the things people share.
I hope you are doing well. You look gorgeous with your pregnancy. Enjoy the time you have for yourself now as much as you can, you won’t have this later.
Good luck with the delivery and all the best becoming a mother!

I just recently thought I should write a blog post about “Sewing as a Mom”, but didn’t know if it would turn out to be a comedy or a tragedy… I will definitely participate.

Dear Monserratt, sorry for the last minute entry, or is it too late with the timeshift? Anyhow here is my post about the subject and thanks again for bringing this up. It is a joy to read everyones experiences and how similar they often are…

I have just found your blog event and it has stirred so many thoughts and memories for me. I have now been a mother for 22 years and have 3 sons. What an experience it has been, and still is! I have sewed on and off for all of those years and would love to have contributed to the event but sadly found it at half past midnight on 1st August. Being a mother will change us all. Last night as I cooked a quiche large enough to feed six big appetites, one son was coming home from work, one was playing Chelsea Vs Watford in the garden single handed and the third was talking to me about his university studies. My head was buzzing with all of the sewing projects I had planned. My life is full!

    1. My goodness!! I’m posting the final round-up for the event later today. Probably by 4pm Montréal time. If you manage to squeeze your post by then, I might be able to include it in the round-up! 😊
