The Brenda Milner Phantom Jacket

Hi my dears,

This week I bring you a garment ideal for the days when the weather is fresh and humid. Perfect rainy-warm days. This garment is a light A line jacket with a vintage vibe. I made it to test this silhouette as well as a few pattern modifications. This garment is dedicated to Professor Brenda Milner (more about her at the end of this post).

The pattern for this jacket is the Phantom by the Sew Chic Pattern Company. Laura Nash is the creator and her designs are just gorgeous. This jacket is made out of a cotton twill with a beautiful print, which I got from the Tomato fabric store in the Nippori fabric town in Japan.

Pattern modifications:

I graded the pattern between sizes starting at a 16 at the shoulders and up to a 20 at the bust line and below. I drafted the sleeves in a size 20. I followed Tanya’s grading method to do these pattern modifications hoping to preserve the design of the garment. This is my first time grading this way, and I should say I am pretty pleased with the result.

 Note:

I recommend this pattern if you have some experience in shirt making. The instructions are NOT very detailed and you may find it difficult to complete the project if you don’t have such skills yet.

Here is the result:

I can’t tell you how much I love it!! ❤

It is so comfortable and fresh!! The fabric print and drape are so beautiful!! The pockets, Ohh!!! Those pockets!! I’m in LOVE with the pockets of this jacket, they are so roomy and practical!! The world can go inside them!!

This garment changed my perspective on styles with large amounts of ease. I didn’t really expect to like this style so much!! I now realize the importance of properly pairing the pattern and the fabric for a garment. I am now interested in exploring styles with greater amounts of ease.

What do you think? Do you like it? Do you like garments that are not so fitted to the body? Have you explored new styles?

BTW, MexicanPink now has a Facebook fanpage! To get to it follow the link at the bottom of this page (below the Bloglovin widget).

❤ M

Snippet of science:

This coming week Professor Brenda Milner will be celebrating her 97th birthday at the Montreal Neurological Institute. Professor Milner is a brilliant memory expert – brain scientist. She continues to do research to this date!!

If you are interested in learning more about her work on one of the most studied minds in history (her patient Henry Molaison) I leave below a couple of videos (12 and 5 min).

I hope you like it!
